YouTube Thumbnail Study: October 2026

Faces, text, colours and titles of the 300 most-viewed new YouTube videos in 10 niches. Measured by image analysis, not by opinion. Free data (CC BY 4.0).

Key findings

84%show a face
80%have text
13%put text where YouTube's timestamp covers it
40%of titles are longer than 70 characters and get cut in search

In the week of 2026-10-12 we took the 30 most-viewed videos uploaded that week in each of 10 niches (gaming, vlogs, fitness, finance, food, tech, travel, education, podcasts, beauty) and measured every thumbnail: faces and their size and position, text and how big it is, brightness, saturation, colours. We also measured the titles. That is 300 videos.

1. Faces and text are the entry ticket, not the winning move

84% of the top thumbnails show at least one face and 80% contain text (73% with text big enough to read on a phone). 49% show two or more faces. So almost everyone does it.

But within the top 30 of each niche, the videos with a face or with text did not rank higher than those without. We ranked every video by views inside its own niche (0 = least viewed of the 30, 100 = most viewed). The medians are close together and the differences are within what you would expect by chance with groups this size:

FeatureVideos withRank (median)Videos withoutRank (median)

Title over 60 characters15951.714148.3
Bright thumbnail (over 60/100)13244.816851.7

Our reading: a face and readable text are what successful thumbnails in most niches look like, so leaving them out is risky. Adding them does not make a video win. The topic, the channel and the packaging as a whole decide that.

2. One in eight thumbnails hides text under the timestamp

YouTube puts the video length in a dark badge in the bottom right corner of every thumbnail. 13% of the top thumbnails (16% of those with text) have text in exactly that corner. It is an easy fix: keep the bottom right free. You can check your own thumbnail with our thumbnail checker.

3. Faces sit on the right more often

Of the thumbnails with faces, 40% have the main face on the right, 31% on the left and 29% in the centre. Right-side faces leave the left for text, which is read first.

4. Titles are long, and most get cut

The median title has 65 characters. 53% are longer than 60 and 40% longer than 70 characters, so the end is cut off in search on desktop and even more on phones. 41% of titles contain a number, 29% an emoji and only 7% ask a question. Check yours with the character counter.

Food is the outlier: only 40% of food thumbnails show a face and 27% have text. They sell the dish. Beauty has by far the biggest faces. Finance thumbnails all carry text.

Method and limits

Videos: the 30 most-viewed videos uploaded in the past week per niche, found with YouTube search filtered by upload date and sorted by views, collected 2026-10-12. Faces: OpenCV YuNet face detector. Text: PP-OCRv3 text detector (we measure where text is and how big, we do not read it). "Big enough for a phone" means a text line is at least 9% of the thumbnail height. Timestamp zone: text that reaches into the bottom right 18% × 18% of the image.

Limits: this is a snapshot of one week and only of videos that already did well, so it shows what top videos have in common, not what causes success. Views depend heavily on channel size. Search results can vary by region. We publish the raw data so you can check everything.

FAQ

What percentage of top YouTube thumbnails show a face?

84% of the 300 most-viewed new videos in our October 2026 sample show at least one face. In vlogs and podcasts it was 100%, in food only 40%.

Do thumbnails with faces get more views?

Not in our data. Among the top 30 videos of each niche, videos with a face did not rank higher than those without. Faces are common among successful thumbnails, but they do not guarantee more views.

How long should a YouTube title be?

Short enough that the key words are in the first 60 to 70 characters, because search cuts the rest. In our sample the median was 65 characters and 40% were cut.

Where should I not put text on a YouTube thumbnail?

Bottom right. YouTube covers that corner with the video length. 13% of top thumbnails put text there anyway.

Can I use this data?

Yes, under CC BY 4.0. Download the CSV and cite Shortform Kit with a link.
