Which size is the thumbnail?
Usually 1280×720 (maxresdefault). Older or low-resolution uploads sometimes only have 640×480 or 480×360; we take the largest that exists.
Can I download custom thumbnails?
Yes. The custom thumbnail the creator uploaded is what YouTube serves, so that's what you get.
Is this really free?
